Mortgaging and re-mortgaging

The expenses incurred by borrowers who are mortgaging their property for the first time, or who are re-mortgaging are:

  1. Mortgage lender's charges, varying from lender to lender.
  2. Mortgage broker's charges. These may be payable on completion of the mortgage, or they may be added to the mortgage.
  3. Surveyor's and valuer's charges.
  4. Search Fees. Most search fees will not be payable if the lender will accept search insurance. The premium for search insurance is comparatively cheap. We recommend that you find out from your lender before committing yourself.
  5. Registration fee This is the fee payable to the Land Registry for registering your new mortgage. Registration fees are cheaper for mortgages and re-mortgages than for house purchases (see here).
    .
  6. Note: stamp duty is not payable on mortgages or re-mortgages.
